The Nippon Foundation and Livanes are seeking colleagues to help us find challenges in the marine field and create a new future of living with the sea. We will now begin providing research support to junior and senior high school students for their research activities in all research themes related to the ocean, the fisheries field, and the aquatic environment!

Application Guidelines

Application Theme

All kinds of research related to the sea, fisheries field, and aquatic environment
Any field is welcome, including manufacturing related to the sea and underwater, such as ships and offshore wind power plants, research on the ecology and utilization of marine organisms and marine products, and research to learn about and protect the marine environment.

Application Requirements

Please make sure that you meet the following application requirements and submit your research ideas, plans, etc. for this call for proposals on the application form.

Subject of application

Teams of two or more junior high school students, high school students, and technical college students (3rd year or younger)
*Compositions by different schools and grades are acceptable.

Application Requirements

  • Junior high school students, high school students, or technical college students (3rd year or younger) who are engaged in research activities must apply on their own initiative.
  • The student must have a supervisor to supervise his/her research activities and must have the supervisor's recommendation and consent.
  • The applicant must be able to provide information (including contact information) that must be provided on the application form.
  • Must be able to participate in online interviews.
  • The first selected team must attend the results presentation in each block in August 2017 (the venue will be a city within each block). *Transportation expenses will be paid separately from research expenses (subject to a limit).
  • If selected for the second round, the applicant must participate in the final results presentation to be held in March 2018 (venue is planned to be Tokyo). *Transportation expenses will be paid separately from research expenses (subject to a limit).

Grant Details and Number of Grants Available

First round: 12 teams (60 teams in total) in each of the five blocks of (1) Hokkaido/Tohoku, (2) Kanto, (3) Kansai, (4) Chugoku/Shikoku, and (5) Kyushu/Okinawa will receive 50,000 yen for their research.
*Transportation expenses for the presentation of results will be paid separately from the research expenses (up to 20,000 yen per team).
Second round of adoption: 50,000 yen for research expenses for each of the three teams from the first round of adoption from the five blocks (15 teams in total)
*Transportation expenses for the presentation of results will be paid separately from the research expenses (maximum 120,000 yen per team).

Use of Research Funds

Expenses required for research activities (reagents, purchase of parts, etc., equipment, transportation, etc., excluding food and beverages) However, food and beverage expenses are excluded.)

Secondary Adoption: Review at the results presentation (oral presentation) held in each block / August 2017

criterion (criteria) for selection

Selection will be made based on a comprehensive review of the following requirements
Are there any deficiencies in the application form? Is the description easy to understand?
Is the research team enthusiastic about the project?
Is there a flow of ❸ assignment setting → literature survey → hypothesis setting → verification experiment?

Time of decision

First round of adoption: approximately May 26, 2017 (Friday)
Second Adoption: August 2017

Time of payment of research expenses

Scheduled for the end of June 2017

Payment Method

We will transfer the funds to the account designated by the leader of the adopted team.

Research Period

Primary Adoption: June 2017 - August 2017
Secondary Adoption: September 2017 - March 2018

5) Kyushu/Okinawa: 8/27 (Sun.), 2017 @ Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture *This was scheduled for 8/19 (Sat.) or 20 (Sun.), but there has been a change.
