LIVERNESS Corporation and Rolls-Royce Japan K.K. (President: Susumu Kaminaga) will hold the "Rolls-Royce Science Camp," an engineering education program for high school students throughout Japan.
Online Preliminary Round: Sunday, May 15, 2022
Tokyo Main Draw: Thursday, August 18, 2022 Friday, August 19, 2022
We have decided to conduct a second call for applications and will accept applications until 18:00 on Wednesday, April 13, 2022.

Rolls-Royce is committed to STEM education to nurture the next generation of aerospace professionals. Since 2017, REVANES Corporation, together with Rolls-Royce Japan K.K., has been running the Rolls-Royce Science Camp, an engineering education program where students learn through hands-on engineering experience through the development of original hovercrafts.

2022In 2012, the program has been expanded in scale and content has been revamped. The first call for applications closed on February 28, but due to the expanded scale of the program, a second call for applications has been opened, and we are now accepting applications from all over Japan.Teams are invited to participate!

This is a rare opportunity to hear about and discuss research and development from Rolls-Royce engineers. We encourage you to apply.

Rolls-Royce Science Camp 2021 to be held online for the first time

 

Science Camp Summary

Details of implementation All participating teams: 50 teams

Period: March to May 15, 2022

  • Development of small hovercraft
  • Contest with developed hovercraft (online)

 

Qualifying teams: 5 teams

Period: May 15, 2022 - August 18,19, 2022

  • Controlling movement through programming
  • Contest with developed hovercraft (held locally)
Participation Fee Free of charge (some items are to be prepared by the school or team)
Number of teams 18 teams (If there are too many applications, a drawing will be held.)

About the application

Must be a team of at least 2 members

  •  Must be able to participate in both (1) and (2) below
    • ①Online Preliminary Round on Sunday, May 15
    • (2) 2-day event in Tokyo on August 18 (Thursday) and August 19 (Friday)

 

  • Development (-Qualifying): You must be able to do the following 1) and 2) between the time the equipment is received and the online qualifying session (May 15).
    • (1) Assemble the hovercraft that will serve as the base
    • (2) Preparation of the course and space for the contest

 

  • Development (~Final)
    • Additional basic programming practice materials will be provided so that you can develop your own basic programming practices.
Equipment used All teams participating in the program will receive the following equipment

  • Hovercraft Development and Rulebook
  • Hovercraft for hands-on experience (1 for 4 persons * maximum 2)
  • 1 set of development equipment (Styrofoam and other equipment used for development)
  • 1 set of equipment for the contest (driving course, etc.)

 

The five selected teams will receive the following equipment

  • Programming materials (or about 10,000 yen for development and research)

 

Items to be prepared by the team

  • (1) Internet environment
    • →We will use video calls via Microsoft Teams. Please contact us if you are unable to provide this service.
  • (2) Personal computers and peripherals capable of creating presentations and making video calls
  • (3) Tablet or smartphone device (with iOS or Android)
  • (4) Basic craft equipment (cutters, scissors, rulers, etc.)
  • (5) A flat floor large enough to run the hovercraft (at least 4m x 2m)
