A filter paper is used in science experiments to remove only liquid from a solid/liquid mixture. Toray's hollow-fiber membranes have a finer mesh than filter paper, so they can remove color particles from paint-colored water, allowing students to experience and see the changes. Toray will provide original Toray experiment materials that enable students to experience the latest water treatment technology. Through experiments using hollow fiber membranes, which are actually used in water treatment, students can learn how science and technology are useful in their daily lives and how they contribute to solving global environmental problems, thereby increasing their interest in science studies.

We will provide, free of charge, the teaching materials that we plan to use in the delivery classes that we solicited in Kyoiku Ouen vol. 47 (September 2020 issue) (* You will not be responsible for the mailing costs. (* You will also be asked to use the enclosed slip for payment on delivery when returning the materials.) We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity.

Hollow fiber membranes shaped like straws are bundled together and closed in loops.
■When the piston is pulled, colored water is filtered through the hollow fiber membrane
■The filtered liquid coming into the syringe is crystal clear!
What is Hollow Fiber Membrane?
The white string-like object is called a hollow-fiber membrane, which is hollow inside and has many microscopic pores of about 0.01 μm on its walls. The hollow-fiber membrane separates particles that can pass through these pores (e.g., water molecules) from those that cannot (e.g., color components of colored water), and is widely used to remove impurities from water for groundwater and surface water purification, sewage treatment, and other applications.
Flow of a class using this material (example)
introduction | Reflection on the "Aqueous Solutions" unit (What does it mean to dissolve in water? How do you get the dissolved stuff out?) |
experiment | Let's try to separate the liquid mixture of salt and paint in various ways Experiment 1: Let's try filtering with filter paper! Experiment 2: Let's try filtration with a hollow fiber membrane! Experiment 3: Let's try evaporation-drying! |
development | Where are hollow fiber membranes used? Can't they filter salt? |
