Toray Group is offering to provide educational materials to schools that wish to participate in the project.

2021.06.01
[Schools wishing to provide educational materials are invited to apply] Experimental material using hollow fiber membrane "Let's think about particles in water" (Toray Group) to experience the latest water treatment technology.
Filter paper" is used in science experiments to remove only liquid from a mixture of solid and liquid. Toray's hollow fiber membranes have a finer grain than "filter paper" and can remove color particles from paint-colored water, allowing students to experience and see the changes. Toray will provide original Toray experiment teaching materials that allow students to experience the state-of-the-art water treatment technology. Through experiments using hollow fiber membranes, which are also used in actual water treatment, students can learn how science and technology are useful in their daily lives and how they further contribute to solving global environmental problems, thereby increasing their interest in science learning.

We are looking for schools that would like to provide educational materials!

Target: Junior high schools, high schools, and technical colleges nationwide
Period: Within August 1, 2021 - March 31, 2022 (approximately one month before and after the implementation date)
Offerings:
1. 15 sets of experimental kits (hollow fiber membranes and syringes)
2. 1 Teacher's Guide (instructional plan for teachers)
3. 1 CD-ROM (data for class progression slides, worksheets, and practice reports)
Preparations at school: paints, salt, beakers, glass rods, filter paper, funnel, funnel stand, pipette, gas burner, evaporating dish, wire mesh, tripod, crucible scissors, etc.
Terms and conditions: Participants must be willing to return teaching materials, submit a practice report, and complete a short questionnaire within one month after the class is held.
Application deadline: Friday, July 9, 2021, 18:00

Fat Experiment

Hollow fiber membranes shaped like straws are bundled together and closed in loops.

■When the piston is pulled, colored water is filtered through the hollow fiber membrane

■The filtered liquid coming into the syringe is crystal clear!

What is Hollow Fiber Membrane?
The white string-like object is called a hollow-fiber membrane, which is hollow inside and has many microscopic pores of about 0.01 μm on its walls. The hollow-fiber membrane separates particles that can pass through these pores (e.g., water molecules) from those that cannot (e.g., color components of colored water), and is widely used to remove impurities from water for groundwater and surface water purification, sewage treatment, and other applications.

■Points

(1) Direct access to Toray's advanced materials
(2) Linked to the junior high school science unit "Properties of Aqueous Solutions".
(3) Can also be used for SDG themed learning

Flow of a class using this material (example)

introduction Reflection on the "Aqueous Solutions" unit
(What does it mean to dissolve in water? How do you get the dissolved stuff out?)
experiment Let's try to separate the liquid mixture of salt and paint in various ways
Experiment 1: Let's try filtering with filter paper!
Experiment 2: Let's try filtration with a hollow fiber membrane!
Experiment 3: Let's try evaporation-drying!
development Where are hollow fiber membranes used? Can't they filter salt?

We will also be accepting applications from schools of choice for high school students!

This material can be used in the "Exploration of Matter" unit of Basic Chemistry in high school, as well as in research for science projects. In the basic chemistry class, students can review "properties of aqueous solutions" and "atoms and molecules," and deepen their understanding of the concept of "mixtures" as a developmental class to experience the state-of-the-art technology of "filtration," which is used in "separation of mixtures. Through these activities, students can also realize the relationship between chemistry (science and technology) and society. In the research project, students can conduct research activities on familiar themes of water and aqueous solutions.

Fat class
Toray Group also offers on-site classes as part of its educational support activities. If you are interested, please contact us. However, due to the effects of the new coronavirus infection, Toray may cancel the program at its discretion. Please understand this in advance.

business tripWhat is a class?
Toray Group offers on-site classes to learn about advanced materials, using two cutting-edge materials (hollow fiber membranes and carbon fibers) as subjects for solving environmental problems. In addition to experiencing advanced materials through experiments, visitors can hear directly from Toray Group employees about their thoughts and actual work at a company that develops materials that change society.
