Let's see the power of microorganisms! Now accepting applications for schools to conduct experimental classes!
2020.08.30Let's look at the power of microorganisms!
~Chemistry with Microbes! ~
Contents
In this class, students will experiment with alcohol fermentation using microorganisms (dry yeast). 95% of ethanol used in the world is made by changing plant-derived sugars through alcoholic fermentation, and the chemical power of microorganisms is utilized. By experiencing this experimental class, you will be able to witness the "chemistry by microorganisms" that supports the world.
Keywords.
Biology x Chemistry, microorganisms, alcohol fermentation
Related Units
This laboratory class corresponds to the "About Respiration" section in Biology and the "Organic Compounds and Human Life" section in Chemistry.
Number of subjects
15~20 persons
Flow of the experimental class
Required time: 4 hours (first half 2 hours, second half 2 hours)
<First half
Lecture] About alcoholic fermentation, experimental methods and how to keep experimental records.
Activity] Alcohol fermentation experiment (1st session, same conditions for all)
Activity] Consider the conditions for producing more alcohol, formulate a hypothesis, and plan an experiment.
<Late
Lecture] Reflection
Activity] Alcohol fermentation experiment (hypothesis testing based on hypotheses made by students)
Discussion of the results and preparation for presentation
Activity] Results
Lecture] Overall summary, message from lecturer
Anticipated Development
The experience gained in this experimental class is expected to develop into research activities on microorganisms, such as "searching for reaction conditions that maximize the ability of yeast" and "searching for the most efficient yeast for alcohol fermentation in the immediate environment.

remarks
The program can be conducted either onsite or online.
In the case of an online session, there is a possibility that 2~3 teachers from your school will be asked to support the experiment on the day of the workshop. In that case, we will share and practice the experimental procedure in advance.
If any of the teachers at your school have experience in isolating microorganisms or aseptic manipulation using a gas burner, we can propose an experiment to isolate microorganisms in addition to the above.
LIVERNESS conducts laboratory classes using cutting-edge science and manufacturing ideas for a variety of schools and grade levels. In addition to on-site classes, we are also actively developing online classes. If you have any comments or ideas, such as "I would like to conduct this experiment class," or "Is there any way we can conduct this kind of experiment class?
